Hyland Eclipses 1,000 Career Points; Men's Basketball Downs Bowie State, 76-57

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Jackson Hyland (AVONDALE, PA./KENNETT) notched his 1,000th career point to lead the West Chester University men's basketball team past Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) representative Bowie State 76-57 inside the Hollinger Field House on Tuesday evening.

THE BASICS
Final Score: West Chester 76, Bowie State 57
Location: Hollinger Field House – West Chester, Pa.
Records: West Chester 2-2 overall, Bowie State 0-5 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Similar to the beginning of yesterday's impressive victory over Chestnut Hill, the Golden Rams kept their opponent scoreless for a long stretch to start Tuesday's outing. The home team was up 10-0 nearly five minutes into the game before a jumper by BSU's Yohance Fleming put the visitors on the board.
  • That 10-2 score would be as close as the Bulldogs would get in the opening half, as West Chester eventually built a lead as large 29 points following a free throw by sophomore Terrence Moore (PHILADELPHIA, PA./AUDRIEND) with 4:14 remaining.
  • Up 24, senior Frank Rokins (PLAINFIELD, N.J./ST. MARY'S) knocked down two from the line to put the Golden Rams in front 48-22 heading into the locker rooms.
  • Despite outscoring West Chester in the second half, the Bulldogs would be unable to get any closer than 17 points in the final 20 minutes of action and eventually fell 76-57 in this nonconference showdown.

WEST CHESTER RUNDOWN
  • Entering the game just 16 points away from reaching 1,000 points for his career, Hyland notched 12 points in the opening half before reaching the 1,000-point milestone with a free throw early in the second frame. Putting up a team-high 20.3 points per game (No. 8 in the PSAC) this season, Hyland becomes the 26th Golden Ram to reach the 1,000-point plateau and the first since Tyrell Long hit the milestone in February of last season.
  • Behind Hyland's game-high 19-point outing, Rokins finished second on the squad with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and a career-high six steals against the Bulldogs. Rokins' six steals were the most by a WCU player since teammate Jawan Collins (YEADON, PA./ACADEMY PARK) matched that total against Cheyney last year, and the number put Rokins just one steal away from tying WCU's single-game record (held by three individuals).
  • Junior Malik Jackson (LANSDOWNE, PA./PENN WOOD) and freshman Nick Alikakos (WEST CHESTER, PA./THE HILL SCHOOL) both logged 10 points in the victory, while Moore chipped in seven points and a team-high eight rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.
  • WCU improves to 8-0 all-time against the Bulldogs.

BULLDOG BREAKDOWN
  • After going 0-of-7 from beyond the arc in the first half, the Bulldogs connected on just three of their 10 triples in the second half to finish the game with an abysmal 17% clip from deep.
  • David Belle's 13 off the bench represented BSU's only double-figure scoring output in the loss.
  • Belle also added a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss to give the redshirt junior his first double-double of the season.

UP NEXT
  • West Chester will head to the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday, November 24, to square off against Wilmington at 1:00 p.m.
