No. 16 West Chester Edged by Saint Anselm

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-No. 16 West Chester university softball continued its opening weekend in Myrtle Beach facing off against Saint Anselm on Friday afternoon. West Chester fell to Saint Anselm by a final score of 4-1.
 
After two scoreless innings Saint Anselm broke through in the bottom of the third scoring four runs to give Saint Anselm a 4-0 lead thanks to four hits and one error. In the fifth, inning West Chester answered right back when Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) singled which allowed Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) to come home and cut the deficit to three. Unfortunately, at this point there were already two outs and Saint Anselm was able to strikeout Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) to end the threat.
 
Over the course of the next few innings West Chester applied pressure but it was not enough to break through and tie the game.
 
Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) took the loss going five innings and surrendering nine hits, four runs (three earned), and striking out five. Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) entered in relief in the sixth inning and surrendered one hit, and one walk while also registering a pair of strikeouts.
 
Morgan Perry had six solid innings for Saint Anselm surrendering seven hits, and one run while striking out five Golden Rams to earn the victory. Courtney Fisher came on for the save and recorded three ground ball outs to secure the victory.
 
West Chester is back in action tomorrow morning when they face off against Mercyhurst at 10 a.m. before facing Felician in game two at 12 p.m.
