MYRTLE BEACH- S.C.-The West Chester university softball team (1-2) captured its first win of the season on Saturday morning in convincing fashion defeating Mercyhurst (0-3) 8-0 in five innings.

Maegen Kavanagh (Easton, Pa./Easton) (1-1) got the start on Saturday morning and she pitched a gem recording a no-hitter in just the second outing of her collegiate career. Kavanagh allowed just four batters to reach base by virtue of three walks and a hit by pitch, but she also struck out three en route to the victory.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when
Heidi McCollester (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) came up clutch with a single to centerfield plating two Golden Rams in the process to give West Chester a 2-0 lead.
Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) followed this up with an RBI single to plate McCollester giving West Chester a 3-0 lead heading to the top of the fifth.Â
In the bottom of the fifth,
Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) continued her big weekend as she drove a single up the middle to bring home another run making the score 4-0 in favor of West Chester.
Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampter-Strasburg) came home shortly thereafter as she scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0 West Chester.
Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) followed this up with a huge two-run home run which made the score 7-0 still in the bottom of the fifth. Finally, McCollester stepped in and delivered the crushing blow with a home run of her own which made the score 8-0 to bring the game to a close.
Tori Pierucci took the loss for Mercyhurst as he went four innings and surrendered six runs (five earned), as well as eight hits. Allison Smith entered late in the fifth inning and surrendered another two runs which brought the game to a close after five innings.
West Chester is scheduled to play again at 12 p.m. when they square off against Felician.
