MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-The West Chester University (2-3) softball team continued its opening weekend in Myrtle Beach on Sunday afternoon competing against West Virginia State. West Chester battled all game long but West Virginia State ultimately prevailed winning by a final of 10-6.

West Virginia State (WVSU) got off to a fast start as they scored one run during the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, West Chester answered right back thanks to an RBI single from
Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) to score
Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan). Kelly Tinsman (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) followed this up with an RBI single of her own to give West Chester a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the second inning, WVSU answered right back posting a four spot thanks to a three-run triple and a sac bunt making the score 5-2. This outburst closed the book on
Maegan Kavanagh (Easton, Pa./Easton) who went two innings and surrendered five runs which led to her suffering her second loss of the young season. Stump produced another RBI single in the third to cut the deficit to two heading to the bottom half of the third inning.
Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) entered for the third and surrendered one more run on a home run but otherwise managed to escape the third with little damage. In the fourth inning, WVSU scored another four runs to open up a commanding 10-3 lead. Tinsman ultimately entered to record the final out of the fourth inning and she finished the game without surrendering any more runs to the Yellow Jackets.

In the fifth inning,
 Jamie Klemas (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) recorded her first collegiate homerun to cut the deficit to 10-4.
Alyssa Herion (Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) got in on the act in the sixth inning as she hit a home run of her own which also scored
Caroline Adams (Media, Pa./Renaissance Academy) to make the scored 10-6.

Emily Thompson got the ball for West Virginia State and she went seven innings surrendering 11 hits, and six runs while striking out four Golden Rams.

West Chester will be back in action on Saturday the 24
th when they take on Salem and Chowan in the Hawks Softball Classic.
