MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The West Chester University softball team (3-3) was back in action on Saturday afternoon as they squared off against Salem University (0-2) in the Hawks Classic. West Chester went on to win by a final score of 5-1.
Salem started off strong as they scored the first run of the game in the first inning of play but thanks to a huge 9-2 double play courtesy of a great throw from right fielder
Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md./Westminster) West Chester escaped the first inning trailing by just one.
In the bottom half of the first,
Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) singled through the left side and drove home
Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) and Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) to give West Chester the 2-1 lead after the first inning of play.
Starting pitcher
Maegen Kavanagh (Easton, Pa./Easton) settled right in after her rocky first inning and struck out the side in the second, to get West Chester back up to the plate.
Ashley Flesch (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) kept things rolling in the second, as she smoked the ball back up the middle to plate
Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) which gave West Chester the 3-1 lead.
The Golden Rams bats came back to life in the bottom half of the fifth inning as #
Alyssa Herion# (Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) drove in
Caroline Adams (Media, Pa./Renaissance Academy) giving West Chester a commanding 4-1 lead.
Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) quickly followed this up with an RBI single which scored Kelly and gave West Chester the 5-1 lead that they would never relinquish.
Kavanagh (2-2) picked up her second victory of the year as she went 4.1 surrendering just one run and three hits while striking out five.
Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) entered in the fourth and went the final 2.2 allowing just one batter to reach via a walk while striking out three to earn the save.
West Chester is back in action later Saturday afternoon when they take on Chowan.
