MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Golden Rams may have had to wait to conclude this contest but it was well worth the wait as West Chester defeated Chowan by a final score of 4-0 early Sunday morning.
This game began at 4:30 on Saturday afternoon and the teams were able to get through four innings before darkness caused the game to be suspended. Play ultimately resumed on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. and West Chester picked up right where they left off to earn the victory.
West Chester got its first runs of the game in exciting fashion as they executed a beautiful double steal with
Jamie Klemas (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) stealing second and
Ali LaRosa (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) coming home to take an early 1-0 lead.
This lead grew in the fifth, when
Caroline Adams (Media, Pa./Renaissance Academy) beat the throw home on what was scored as a fielder's choice for
Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) to take a 2-0 lead. Following this play the game was suspended due to darkness and it was resumed earlier this morning. West Chester picked up right where they left off on Sunday morning as they added another run in the fifth after
Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) worked a walk to score
Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) which gave West Chester a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth, Garber came through once again this time with an RBI double that scored Kelly to give West Chester a 4-0 advantage.
Senior pitcher
Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) (2-1) was dominant on the mound as she went all seven innings surrendering just four hits and two walks while striking out six to earn her second victory of the young season.
West Chester is back in action today at 9 and 11 against U Sciences at 9 and Salem at 11.
