West Chester Cruises Past Salem 12-2

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – West Chester won its final game of the weekend in convincing fashion as they dispatched Salem winning by a score of 12-2 in five innings.

Salem jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first, but West Chester was undeterred as they answered right back in the top of the second with two runs of their own thanks to a two-run homerun off the bat of Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md./Westminster) to make the score 2-1. Salem answered back in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2 heading to the third.

In the top of the third, the bats came alive once again as Alyssa Herion (Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) smoked a double down the left field line to score Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) which allowed West Chester to regain a 3-2 lead. Jamie Klemas (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) was up next and she followed up Herion's double with a homerun to centerfield to give West Chester a comfortable 5-2 lead.

The bats continued to fire on all cylinders in the top of the fourth, as Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) and Garber both recorded RBI sacrifice flies to score Maseth and Sarah Byham (Westampton, N.J./Holy Cross) which made the score 7-2 in the fourth. Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) kept things going with an RBI double which scored Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) extending the lead to 8-2. Herion followed this up with another RBI as she singled through the left side which was enough to score Ali LaRosa (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) making the score 9-2 after four.

In the fifth, Maseth continued to see the ball well as she recorded her second two-run home run of the day this time scoring Tori McCoach (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell-Egan) to extend the lead to 11-2.  Ercolani added another insurance run when she came through with a single to score Ashley Flesch (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) to make the score 12-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) earned the start and went 1 2/3 surrendering two runs before giving way to Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) (3-1) who went the remaining 3.1 surrendering just two hits while striking out seven to earn her second victory of the day.

West Chester will be back in action on March 9th when they travel to Clermont, Florida to compete in the PFX games where they will open against Cedarville beginning at 9 a.m.

Notes:
Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) recorded her first career collegiate hit in the fifth inning.
