WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Jared Melone (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) went 5-for-6 with a grand slam, seven RBI and four runs scored to lead the offensive onslaught in a non-league victory over University of the Sciences in the first round of the Bill Giles Classic at Serpico Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

The home opener for the defending national champions saw West Chester (3-2) rap out 23 hits in a 21-6 win over USciences (3-4). The victory propels the Golden Rams into the Bill Giles Championship, which will be played at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on April 17 against the winner of Wilmington (Del.) vs. Jefferson.

West Chester scored three in the first, one in the third, three in the fourth, eight in the fifth, four in the sixth and two more in the seventh to cruise to the win.ÂÂ USciences scored all six of its runs in the sixth inning.

Drew Jarmuz (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) went 4-for-5 with a triple while
Joey Coyle (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) finished 3-for-5.

West Chester is off until March 10 when the Golden Rams begin spring break in Florida against PSAC West foe Seton Hill. West Chester will play six games down south, before heading back north to continue its season.
