CLERMONT, Fla. – The West Chester University softball team was back on the field for a second time on Saturday afternoon this time taking on Lewis. West Chester won by a final score of 4-2.
Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) (5-2) bounced right back after suffering a tough loss a day ago as she went the final four innings allowing just one hit and no runs while also striking out one.
Jen Hanshaw (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) got the start this afternoon and while she allowed two unearned runs in the first inning she still tossed three solid innings scattering just four hits and the two runs while also striking out two.
Kaylee Prieto got the first inning going for Lewis when she reached on an error on what should have been the third out of the inning to extend the top of the first. Cierra Taylor followed this up with a single to short to keep the going and put runners on first and second with two outs. At this point, Morgan Weber stepped in and took the 0-2 offering to left for a double, which scored both Prieto and Taylor giving Lewis the early 2-0 lead.
In the second inning,
Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) got the Golden Rams on the board with a sacrifice fly to right which scored
Alyssa Herion(Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) to cut the deficit in half. The Golden Rams tied the game in the third inning, when
Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.
In the fourth,
Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) took the 2-2 pitch to right scoring
Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md./Westminster), which gave West Chester its first lead of the afternoon while also keeping the bases loaded.
Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) was up next and she promptly stepped up and delivered a single to right field as well which scored
Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), thus, giving the Golden Rams a decisive 4-2 lead heading to the fifth.
This lead was all the Golden Rams needed as Houck was dominant over the course of her final three innings of work surrendering just one hit with two outs in the seventh. This hit proved to be inconsequential as Houck retired the next batter with ease to earn her fifth victory of the young season.
West Chester is back in action on Monday evening for a doubleheader against Molloy beginning at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
