CLERMONT, Fla. – The West Chester University softball team (14-5) was back in action this afternoon looking for its second win of the day and seventh win in a row opposite Purdue Northwest. West Chester went on to win by a final score of 6-5.
Madison Kelly (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) got things started in the second inning, when she reached on a fielder's choice, which also scored
Alyssa Herion (Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) to give West Chester the early 1-0 lead. A few batters later
Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) followed this up with an RBI of her own to score Kelly and give West Chester the 2-0 lead.
In the third,
Cat Hammer (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) came through with a big two-run homerun which scored
Sara Ercolani (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) to give the Golden Rams a commanding 4-0 lead. Herion recorded an RBI of her own a few batters later with a single up the middle to score
Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md./Westminster), which gave WCU a 5-0 lead heading to the bottom half of the third.
Purdue Northwest scored five runs of its own between the bottom half of the fourth and fifth innings thanks in large part to two homers, and an RBI double to tie the score at 5-5 heading to the sixth.
In the sixth, Maseth came through with a single to right to score
Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), which gave West Chester the 6-5 lead entering the bottom of the sixth.
Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa./Kennett) went 3.2 surrendering five hits and four runs while striking out three.
Kelly Tinsman (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) entered for the next 2.1 and allowed just three hits and one unearned run while striking out one to earn the victory, which improved her record to 4-0 on the year.
Jen Hanshaw (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) entered for the final inning and surrendered just one hit to earn the save.
West Chester is back in action tomorrow morning against IUP and Southern New Hampshire at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. in what will be its final day of competition in the Sunshine State.
