HERSHEY, Pa. - West Chester University's men's tennis squad dropped a 9-0 decision to visiting Mercyhurst University at the Hershey Racquet Club Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (0-11) fought hard in the doubles competition, despite dropping all three verdicts to a very strong Mercyhurst squad (12-1). The Lakers swept all six singles as well to pick up the team's seventh straight win on the season.
Adam Courtemanche (Greenville, R.I./Smithfield) and
Aiden Henken (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) fell 8-4 at third doubles.
Lucas Von der Heyde (Exton, Pa./Great Valley) and Charlie Rushing (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) fell 8-2 at first doubles while
Norman Patten (Warminster, Pa./Council Rock South) and
Luc DeCecco (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) also fell 8-2.
"The men really did play very, very well against a much stronger Mercyhurst team," WCU head coach Tina Tharp said. "I was happy with how all three sets of partners played together."
Patten took one of the top men's players in the PSAC, if not the region, to a third, tie-breaker set, finally falling 10-6. Nemad Terzic won the first set, 7-5 while Patten took the second, 6-2. The other five singles were straight-set victories for the Lakers. However, Von der Heyde dropped the first set at No. 2 singles, 7-5.
"We actually played very well on all courts," Tharp added. "Mercyhurst is a very, very good team."
West Chester will host Chestnut Hill on Tuesday on South Campus.
