West Chester Tops Jefferson 1-0 to Open 2018 Season

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The West Chester University men's soccer team kicked off its 2018 season on Thursday afternoon against the Jefferson University Rams.West Chester went on to win by a final score of 1-0.

How it Happened:
  • In the first half, each team had its chances as West Chester took seven shots while Jefferson took four shots but strong goalie play from Andrew Menjivar for Jefferson and James Wood (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) kept the game scoreless.
  • In the 27th minute, West Chester found itself with a golden opportunity as Tyler Rapposelli (Reading, Pa./Fleetwood) stepped up for a PK but Menjivar stood tall making the save to keep WCU off the scoreboard.
  • Finally, in the 63rd minute, Jason Pixley (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) played the hero as he scored after Stephen Thompson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) hit a rocket off the far post past a diving keeper, which gave PIxley the opportunity to bury the rebound for the game-winner. 
  • Wood stood tall in goal throughout the contest making two clutch saves to keep Jefferson scoreless while his counterpart Menjivar made three impressive saves of his own in what proved to be a losing effort.
Inside the Box Score:
  • West Chester outshot its guests by a wide 12-4 margin although the Golden Rams only held a two shot (4-2) advantage in shots on goal.
  • West Chester also dominated the game in terms of corner kicks winning that battle 11-0, which was a clear by-product of the constant pressure applied by West Chester throughout the contest
Next up for West Chester:
On Monday afternoon, West Chester will make the trip to Lakewood, New Jersey to square off against the Georgian Court Lions in non-conference action with that contest getting underway at 12 p.m.
