No. 6 Stonehill Hangs On For Win Over No. 5 West Chester, 2-1


EASTON, Mass. - West Chester University's field hockey team dropped a season-opening 2-1 decision to host Stonehill College inside W.B. Mason Stadium Saturday afternoon. Stonehill (2-0) scored the first two goals of the game, before the Golden Rams (0-1) got on the scoreboard. However, the visitors could not find the equalizer.
 
How It Happened
  • Stonehill's Kacie Smith opened the scoring with a drive from the right side just inside the arc.
  • Teammate Carly Anderson doubled the lead with just four minutes left in the contest.
  • However, the Golden Rams were not done. Kaitlin Hatch (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) cut the lead in half with just over one minute to play.

  • West Chester outshot its opponent, 21-18.
  • Stonehill came up with a pair of defensive saves, which proved to be the difference in the game.
  • Stonehill goalkeeper Sarah Freedman made 12 saves to backstop the Skyhawks' victory.

The Golden Rams are back in action on Labor Day when they travel to Waltham, Mass., for another non-league contest at Bentley University. Game time has been moved up two hours to 10 a.m. due to the expected high temperatures and heat index.
