WALTHAM, Mass.- The No. 5 West Chester University field hockey team (1-1) was back in action on Monday morning when the team traveled to Bentley (1-1) looking to get back on track after a 2-1 loss to Stonehill to open the season on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Rams did just this as they cruised past the Falcons winning by a final score of 8-3.
How it Happened:
- West Chester broke through first scoring just under five minutes into the contest, when Kelsey Munster (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) took an assist from Katie Thompson (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) for her first goal of the season, which put West Chester on top 1-0 in the early going.
- This lead grew a few minutes later as Munster scored her second of the day to give West Chester a commanding 2-0 lead with just over 25 minutes to play in the first half.
- West Chester was not done yet as Lily Feldman (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) added a goal of her own in the 20th minute, which gave West Chester a sizable 3-0 with just over 15 minutes to play in the first half.
- In the 27th minute, Thompson scored a goal of her own to stretch the lead to 4-0 heading to the halftime break.
- In the second half, Emma Velez (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) broke through for the first goal of her collegiate career to stretch the lead to 5-0 in favor of the Golden Rams.
- In the 45th minute, Bentley did manage to find the back of the cage as Sarah Rockwood registered a goal to cut the deficit to 5-1 with just over 25 minutes to play.
- Bentley continued its comeback bid a few minutes later when Rachel Crowley broke through to trim the West Chester lead to 5-2 with 20 minutes to play. West Chester wasted little time in getting this goal back as Marre Corver (Aarlanderveen, The Netherlands/Scala College) scored off an assist from Thompson to increase the lead to 6-2.
- In the 58th minute, Morgan Van Epps took an assist from Tess Anderson to narrow the Golden Rams lead to three once again making the score 6-3 with 12 minutes to play.
- Dara Spavlik (Hockessin, Del./Conrad) followed this up with a goal of her own six minutes later to extend the lead back to four goals making the score 7-3 with six minutes remaining in the contest.
- Devon Godek (Unionville, Pa./Unionville) scored a goal of her own for added insurance in the final seconds of regulation to give West Chester the 8-3 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- In the first half, West Chester held an impressive advantage over Bentley in terms of shots and shots on goal as the Golden Rams took 13 shots including 10 on goal compared to just two shots and one shot on goal for the Falcons. West Chester also held a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners during the first half of play.
- West Chester ended the contest outshooting Bentley by a margin of 30-10 including a 19-6 advantage in shots on goal. West Chester also finished with a 9-4 edge in penalty corners.
- Marissa Elizardo (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) worked hard in the cage making three big saves while her counterpart Jana Mones had an even busier day making 10 saves in an attempt to slow down the potent West Chester offense.
- West Chester had a balanced attack throughout the afternoon as seven different Golden Rams tallied goals in the victory.
