Volleyball Opens Day Two of Ram Fest with a Sweep of Salem

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The West Chester University volleyball team kicked off day two of Ram Fest 2018 by defeating Salem University 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-13) on Saturday to give the Golden Rams their fourth sweep of the season and second of the weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • West Chester (6-0) was able to build and maintain a small lead over the Tigers throughout the opening moments of the first set, but the visitors were able to keep themselves within striking distance throughout the early part of the frame. Up 16-10, the Golden Rams blew the game open with a 6-0 run – capped by two kills from Grace Whitney (LENSIDE, PA/ABINGTON) – to race out to the 22-10 advantage. The Golden Rams were able to maintain their cushion for the remainder of the match, until Jillian Grammer (CENTER VALLEY, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) connected with Abbie Dischert (WILMINGTON, DE./CONCORD) to end the stanza with West Chester on top, 25-14.
  • The Golden Rams raced out to a sizable 19-9 lead to start the second frame before a kill by Grammer would spark a set-ending 6-0 spurt for the home team to hand West Chester the convincing 25-9 win in set two.
  •  Set three saw WCU jump out to a 4-1 advantage, before Salem answered back with a 3-0 run to knot the frame early. A kill by Grammer on the following play put West Chester in front 5-4 and the Golden Rams never looked back. Up 11, Grammer connected with Dischert one final time to seal the 25-13 win for the Golden Rams, giving West Chester its fourth sweep of the 2018 season.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Dischert paced all players with nine kills on 22 total attacks (.182), while Grammer added a match-high 32 assists to go along with five digs and three kills.
  • Nicki Yates (COOPERSBURG, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) logged 15 digs in the win to give the graduate student her fifth 10-plus dig performance of the season.
  • The Golden Rams notched a hitting percentage of .300 (40-13-90) in the match, while holding the Tigers to a -.093 (11-18-75) clip on the afternoon. Salem's negative hitting percentage marks the second time this season (Goldey-Beacom) that West Chester has held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage.
