WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Coming off its first loss of the season last weekend at No. 22 Gannon, the West Chester University volleyball team bounced back with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-17) sweep of Bloomsburg at home on Friday in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
MATCH MILESTONE
After becoming just the second WCU volleyball player to reach 4,000 career assists last week, senior
Jillian Grammer (CENTER VALLEY, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) added another impressive piece to her career resume on Friday, as the setter's 16 digs against the Huskies pushed the Center Valley native past the 1,000-career digs mark. Entering tomorrow's match against Lock Haven, Grammer has amassed 1,006 career digs and 4,045 career assists - making Grammer the only player in Golden Rams' volleyball history to record 4,000+ assists and 1,000+ digs in a career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first set was tied at 4-4 until a 5-0 spurt the Golden Rams (15-1, 4-1 PSAC) put the home team in front, 9-5. Bloomsburg was unable to get any closer than three points for the remainder of the frame and WCU took the opener, 25-18.
- The Huskies took their first lead of the match in the second frame (4-3), but the Golden Rams were quick to respond with a 9-4 run midway through the set to take a comfortable 15-10 advantage. Up 20-14, WCU closed out the second by scoring five of the last seven points of the stanza to take grab the 25-17 win in set two.
- Bloomsburg actually held a lead on two separate occasions in the third, but the Golden Rams would storm back and close out the match by scoring three-unanswered to win the deciding set, 25-17.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Golden Rams notched their third highest hitting percentage (.346) of the season against the Huskies and Friday's performance stands as the sixth time this year that WCU has eclipsed a .300 hitting clip in a match.
- Freshman Julia Vreeswyk (YARDLEY, PA/PENNSBURY) led all players with 14 kills on Friday night. Friday's performance marks the third match in a row that Vreeswyk has recorded 10-plus kills and the sixth time overall this season.
- Grammer recorded a match-high 23 assists to go along with 16 digs in the victory to give the senior her sixth straight double-double of the season (eighth overall).
- Coming off a season-high 36 digs against Gannon, graduate student Nicki Yates (COOPERSBURG, PA./SOUTHERN LEHIGH) paced all players with 17 digs on Friday night. Entering tomorrow's home match, Yates has scooped at least 10 digs in every contest this season.
- Bloomsburg volleyball (4-10, 0-5 PSAC) is in its first year as a varsity sport.
