Women's Basketball Downs Pitt-Johnstown

WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Looking to bounce back after a difficult loss on Saturday afternoon at the hands of Shippensburg, the West Chester University women's basketball team (10-11, 6-7 PSAC) bounced back on Wednesday evening with a big win over PSAC West foe Pitt-Johnstown (10-10, 6-7 PSAC). The Golden Rams raced out to an early 19-5 lead, which proved to be enough to allow West Chester to earn the 64-52 victory.

How it Happened:
  • In the first quarter, West Chester trailed by a score of 2-0 for the opening three minutes before evening the score at 2-2. From this point, the Golden Rams would go on a 17-3 scoring run to end the first quarter with a solid 19-5 advantage.
  • Pitt-Johnstown had much more success from beyond the arc in the second quarter, after going 0-for-8 from deep to open the contest before shooting 3-of-6 from three in the second quarter. This improvement proved important in helping the Mountain Cats outscore the Golden Rams 16-12 in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 31-21 heading to the halftime break.
  • West Chester outscored its guests 17-12 in the third quarter, which enabled the Golden Rams to lead by a score of 48-33 heading to the final quarter of play.
  • In the fourth and final quarter of play, Pitt-Johnstown worked to close the gap throughout the quarter as they registered 19 points in the quarter while West Chester registered 16 points to earn the 64-52 victory.
Golden Ram Rundown:
  • Madison Torresin (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led all scorers once again in this contest as she finished with 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting, seven rebounds, and five steals while Katherine Fisher (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) scored 14 points and Rylee Power (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) dropped a season-high 13 points off 4-of-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
  • Power and Torresin tied for the team-high in rebounding as they each pulled down seven rebounds while Gabrielle Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) ended with a game-high nine assists.
  • As a team, West Chester ended the game shooting 43.1 % (25-of-58) from the field and 25.0 % (3-for-12) from three-point land. The Golden Rams also ended the game shooting 78.6 % (11-for-14) from the charity stripe in the victory.
  • The Golden Rams also ended the game with advantages in rebounding (39-to-38), points off turnovers (15-5), points in the paint (36-20), and points off the break (10-6) to key the Golden Rams to the home-court victory.
Mountain Cat Mentions:
  • Gabrielle Smith was the Mountain Cats leading scorer and the only Pitt-Johnstown player in double-figures as she ended with 18 points and seven rebounds thanks in large part to a 9-of-11 shooting performance from the charity stripe.
  • Alli McGrath and Nicole Olkosky were the two leading rebounders for Pitt-Johnstown as they each registered nine rebounds to tie for the game-high in this category as well.
  • As a team, West Chester shot 30.0 % (18-of-60) from the field and 17.9 % (5-for-28) from three-point range while also shooting 64.7 % (11-of-17) from the line.
