Jefferson's Clutch Three Lifts West Chester to 66-64 Victory over Rival Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.-The West Chester University women's basketball team (5-10, 1-6 PSAC) took to the road on Saturday afternoon looking to snap its losing streak vs rival Millersville (4-9, 1-5 PSAC). Destiny Jefferson (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) drilled a clutch three-pointer in the closing seconds of regulation off an assist from Gabrielle Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) to lift West Chester to the thrilling 66-64 road victory.

How it Happened:
  • After trading baskets for the opening 10 minutes of play, West Chester found itself with an early six-point (23-17) advantage heading to the second half quarter.
  • In the second quarter, the two sides continued to trade baskets and short runs, which allowed West Chester to carry a 33-30 lead to the halftime break.
  • Coming out of the of the halftime break, the game remained a tightly contested, back-and-forth affair as neither side could get on a run but despite being outscored for the second quarter in a row the Golden Rams managed to hold a slim 50-49 lead heading to the fourth.
  • In the fourth quarter, freshman Zhane Snow (Wilmington, Del./Concord) drilled a three to give the Golden Rams a 61-56 lead with just over two minutes to play. Millersville answered back with an 8-2 run to take a 64-63 lead with just 11 seconds left in regulation. Following a West Chester timeout, Jefferson hit the late three-pointer to give the Golden Rams the 66-64 advantage with just three seconds remaining in regulation, which proved to be enough to allow the guests to snap their losing streak and defeat rival Millersville.
Golden Ram Rundown:
  • Madison Torresin (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led all-scorers as she set a new season-high with 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.
  • Katherine Fisher (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) and Snow joined Torresin as the other two Golden Rams in double-figures as they each scored 13 points while Troisi narrowly missed a triple-double ending with team-highs in rebounds (9) and assists (7) while also chipping in six points.
  • As a team, West Chester shot 25-of-59 (42.4%) from the field while also going 8-for-23 (34.8 %) from beyond the arc. The Golden Rams were sharp from the charity stripe in the game as they went 8-of-9 (88.9 %) for their best mark of the 2018 season.
  • West Chester also out rebounded its hosts (35-32) for the first time since back on December 2nd at home against California (Pa.).
  • The Golden Rams also ended the contest with slim advantages in second chance points (16-15) and points off turnovers (25-20).
A Look at Millersville:
  • Lauren Lister was the leading scorer for the home team as she poured in 19 points while Samantha Brusha had 13 and Courtney Dimoff finished with 12 as the final Marauders in double-figures.
  • As a team, Millersville shot 26-of-59 (44.1%) from the field while also going 6-for-18 (33.3 %) from deep and 6-of-8 (75.0 %) from the line.

West Chester will wrap up its seven-game road trip on Wednesday evening on the road at Mansfield with that game scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m.
