Women's Basketball Tops Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa.-Looking to end its season-long seven game road trip on a high note the West Chester University women's basketball team (6-10, 2-6 PSAC) squared off against PSAC East foe Mansfield (0-11, 0-7 PSAC) on Wednesday evening. Madison Torresin (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) poured in 18 points to lead all scorers for the second consecutive game to help lead West Chester to the 62-43 road victory.

This victory puts West Chester on its first winning streak since November when the Golden Rams rattled off three in a row midway through the month. West Chester is also now 2-1 in the New Year and a perfect 2-0 against Division II opponents as the Golden Rams lone defeat of 2019 came on January 2nd on the road against Division I foe Liberty.

How it Happened:
  • West Chester wasted little time in getting its offense going during the first quarter as the Golden Rams raced out to an early 6-0 lead in the first 1:11 of regulation before the Mounties managed to cut the deficit to 6-2 with just over 8:30 to play. Mansfield got itself on a run from this point outscoring its guests 7-5 over the next four minutes to trail by just two points (11-9). However, West Chester closed the first quarter on a 6-3 run to take a 17-12 lead to the second quarter of play.
  • The second quarter was very similar to the opening stanza as the two teams traded baskets throughout, which allowed West Chester to carry an eight-point (31-23) to the halftime break.
  • In the third quarter, West Chester opened with another impressive run as the Golden Rams outscored the Mounties 13-2 over the course of the first four minutes to take a commanding 44-25 lead. Mansfield went on a run of its own from this point outscoring its guests 12-6 over the course of the final 5:58 of the third quarter but West Chester still held a solid 50-37 lead heading to the fourth and final quarter of play.
  • The fourth quarter was the lowest scoring quarter of the game as the Golden Rams scored just 12 points while holding their hosts to just six points of their own as West Chester held on for the 62-43 victory.
Golden Ram Rundown:
  • Torresin led a trio of Golden Rams in double-figures this evening as the freshman Zhane Snow (Wilmington, Del./Concord) scored 16 points while Katherine Fisher (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven) was close behind with 15 points of her own.
  • Torresin also recorded a game-high five steals while Gabrielle Troisi (Norristown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) led the visitors in rebounds (9) and assists (6) once again on Wednesday night.
  • As a team, West Chester went 27-of-52 (51.9 %) from the field in the contest while also shooting 4-of-17 (23.5 %) from deep in the victory. The Golden Rams also shot just 4-of-9 (44.9 %) from the stripe in the victory.
  • West Chester also ended the contest with a sizable 21-4 advantage in points off turnovers as well as a 30-26 advantage in points in the paint and a 6-4 edge in fast break points.
For the Mounties:
  • Mia Leonard was the leading scorer for Mansfield in this contest as she registered 15 points while also securing a team-high eight rebounds in the loss. Teammate Erin Gibbons finished second on the squad in scoring with eight points while also posting registering a team-high four assists.
  • As a team, the Mounties were just 19-for-52 (36.5 %) from the field and just 4-of-21 (19.0 %) from deep while also going just 1-for-4 (25.0 %) from the stripe in the loss. However, Mansfield did end the game with a 35-28 rebounding edge, which led to the Mounties also ending the contest with a 7-4 advantage in second-chance points.

West Chester will return home for the first time in over a month on Saturday afternoon when PSAC East rival Bloomsburg comes to town with that contest getting underway at 1 p.m.
