Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Top-Ranked West Chester Blanks Molloy, 9-0

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – A four-goal blitzkrieg over a five-minute span in the second quarter propelled top-ranked West Chester University to a 9-0 shutout over visiting Molloy College in a non-league field hockey match at sun-splashed Vonnie Gros Field Thursday.

West Chester (11-0) set a school record for most wins to open a season while also equaling the longest winning streak at any point in a single season under head coach Amy Cohen. The Golden Rams also won 11 straight in 2014 en route to the 2014 PSAC Championship.

How it Happened:
•       West Chester held a 2-0 advantage after the first quarter when the hosts finally broke through in the second quarter for four goals to take a 6-0 lead into halftime.
•       Caitie McNamara (Buderim, Australia) and Katie Thompson (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) each finished with a pair of goals and an assist in the first half alone.
•       Sophie Ruppert (Manheim, Germany) started the second-quarter onslaught with her first tally of the season in the 18th minute.
•       McNamara scored her second of the game 45 seconds later, and then Dara Spavlik (Hockessin, Del./Conrad) penciled her name in the score sheet three minutes after that.
•       Thompson finished off the spurt with her team-leading 12th goal of the season seven minutes before halftime.

Inside the Box Score:
•       Tara Hausker (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) and Danielle Venter (Auckland, New Zealand) each scored their first career college goals.
•       Devon Godek (Unionville, Pa./Unionville) registered an assist for her first point of the season.
•       Claire Nielsen (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) combined with Marycate London (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) on the shutout. Nielsen made two saves in the first half.

West Chester returns to Vonnie Gros Field Saturday at 4 p.m. for a conference showdown with Mercyhurst.
