West Chester Ranked Sixth In First NCAA Regional Poll

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The road to McKinney, Texas for the 2019 NCAA Division II football championship has begun. The first NCAA regional rankings were released Monday afternoon, and West Chester University found itself ranked sixth by the Super Region One committee.

Unlike most other DII sports that have eight regions, football is broken down into four Super Regions. Since four conferences make up each Super Region, there are no automatic qualifiers, another trait unique to football. The top seven seeds in each regional ranking advance to the tournament. The top seed in each of the four Super Regions gets a first-round bye. Once the teams reach the national semifinals, the four teams are seeded No. 1 through No. 4.

However, there are some changes in the selection process for 2019. The change will be in the Nos. 5-7 seeds, where the committee will have the flexibility to move those teams out of region, or in-region to a closer destination, to cut down on flights. For example, the traditional No. 2 vs. 7 and No. 4 vs. 5 regional matchups could become No. 2 vs. 5 and No. 4 vs. 7 if the travel plans make more sense.

The final 28-team field will be revealed on Sunday, Nov. 17.
