Volleyball Drops Senior Day Match, Finishes 2019 With 17-15 Record

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester University closed out its 2019 season on Saturday afternoon with a 17-15 record after taking a three-set lost to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Southeast Division rival Shippensburg University at Hollinger Field House.

The Golden Rams (5-14 PSAC) celebrated Senior Day by honoring Shaye Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg), Rachel Robb (Blackwood, N.J. / Paul VI) and Emily Ahern (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West) before the match against the Raiders (25-5 overall, 17-2 PSAC).

How it happened:
  • West Chester had Shippensburg on the ropes in the first set as sophomore Julia Vreeswyk (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) posted a kill to give the Golden Rams a 24-21 lead. However, the Raiders scored seven of the next nine points to win it 28-26.
  • The Golden Rams battled in the second set as well as they trailed 17-16 when sophomore Grace Whitney (Glenside, Pa. / Abington) recorded a kill. However, Shippensburg slammed on the gas again to pull away and win 25-19.
  • WCU jumped out to an 11-7 lead on an Ahern service ace, but the Raiders rallied to go ahead 21-18. West Chester didn't let up, and the score was 24-23 before Shippensburg won the match with the final point.
Inside the numbers:
  • Whiteman had a team-high 17 digs in the match to close out her college career with 2,078 digs.
  • Ahern led West Chester with 28 assists and four aces on Saturday. She recorded 620 digs and 483 assists during her college volleyball career with the Golden Rams.
  • Robb had eight kills against Shippensburg, bringing her career total to 673. She also posted 222 blocks in her four years with West Chester.
