Baseball Tops Goldey-Beacom 6-3 on Saturday Afternoon

NEWARK, Del.- The West Chester University baseball team (8-2) was back in action on Saturday afternoon opposite Goldey-Beacom (1-12). West Chester used a big sixth inning to earn the 6-3 victory over Goldey-Beacom on Day One of the Delaware Classic hosted by the University of Delaware.

In the bottom of the second, Goldey-Beacom used an RBI double to secure the early lead. However, this lead did not last as Corey Webb (Easton, Pa./Easton) answered back with an RBI single to left to plate teammate Luke Cantwell (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) and even the score at 1-1 during the fourth inning of play.

Jared Melone and Cantwell registered a pair of RBI doubles in the home half of the fifth, which gave the Golden Rams a 3-1 lead.

This lead doubled the next inning after a SAC fly from Justin Horn (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Dublin) and a pair of RBI singles off the bats of Joey Coyle (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) and Joe Zirolli (Kennett, Pa./Kennett Square), which gave the purple and gold a commanding 6-3 lead midway through the contest.

In the home half of the sixth, Goldey-Beacom answered back with a pair of RBI singles of its own to trim the deficit to 6-3 heading to the seventh. This would be the extent of the scoring on the afternoon as each side threatened over the course of the final three innings but neither team was able to drive in any runners, thus, giving West Chester its eighth victory of the season by a final of 6-3.

Jon Fisher (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) (3-0) earned the victory on the mound after going five innings allowing just four hits and one run while striking out three Goldey-Beacom batters.  Evan Snyder (Cheyney, Pa./Rustin) recorded his first save of the year as he pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts and a fly out to secure the 6-3 victory.

West Chester will be back in action tomorrow as the Golden Rams are scheduled to face the University of Delaware (Division I) at 11 a.m. before squaring off against Goldey-Beacom at 3 p.m. This will be a final tune-up for the Golden Rams before opening conference play next weekend opposite Mansfield on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
