Joey Coyle (WILMINGTON, DEL./SALESIANUM) in the eighth propelled the Golden Rams to the 3-1 victory over the Lightning on Sunday night.
This evening's win over Goldey-Beacom (1-13) marked the second time that the Golden Rams defeated the Lightning this weekend, as West Chester downed GBC 6-3 last night behind a three-run sixth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sunday's nightcap remained scoreless through 5.5 frames, until a RBI single by senior Jared Melone (NORTH WALES, PA./NORTH PENN) put the Golden Rams in front 1-0 entering the seventh frame.
- Following a scoreless seven by both squads, Goldey-Beacom squared the game at 1-1 after Trent Hearn scored on an error by WCU's leftfielder to knot the game at 1-1.
- The eighth inning has been magical for the Golden Rams in the early going this season and Sunday night was no different. As sophomore Justin Horn (WILLOW GROVE, PA./UPPER DUBLIN) stood on first after reaching on an error, Coyle stepped to the dish and cranked his team-leading second home run of the season to hand the Purple & Gold the 3-1 advantage through eight.
- With senior lefty Scott McKenna (HAVERTOWN, PA./HAVERFORD) on the mound in relief of Mervis, the Lightning went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to secure the 3-1 win for West Chester on Sunday night.
Coyle and freshman
Luke Cantwell (BROOMALL, PA./MARPLE NEWTOWN) both logged two hits in Sunday's win, with Coyle adding a team-high two runs to go along with one RBI and that crucial long ball in the eighth inning. Horn was responsible for the other West Chester run on Sunday, while Melone added one hit and one RBI in the winning effort.
Mervis sat down 10 batters in his 7.0 innings of work and McKenna moved to 2-0 on the season after allowing one unearned run on two hits in 2.0 innings pitched.

The Golden Rams (9-3) will host their first home series of the season next weekend, as West Chester welcomes Mansfield to the Serpico Field for a doubleheader on Friday (March 22) with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
