KISSIMEE, Fla.- Back in action for the first time in almost two weeks, the West Chester University baseball team (4-0) seemed unfazed by the layoff as the Golden Rams defeated the Winona State Warriors by a final score of 8-2 in a single, nine-inning game.
Six of the Golden Rams eight runs came via the long ball as
Jared Melone (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) connected on a solo shot in the first inning before
Joe Zirolli (Kennett, Pa./Kennett) launched a three-run home run in the third and
Justin Horn (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Dublin) connected on a two-run homer in the home half of the sixth.
The Golden Rams other two runs came via an RBI single from
Luke Cantwell (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) and an RBI double from
Michael Krusinski (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) during the third inning of play, which proved to be sufficient to lead the Golden Rams to the 8-2
victory.
On the mound, senior
Jon Fisher (PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA./PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH) got his first victory of the 2019 campaign on Saturday after holding Winona State to zero runs on six hits with six strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched.
Winona State scored its two runs of the contest in the top of the ninth inning to prevent West Chester from registering its third-straight shutout.
West Chester will be back in action tomorrow afternoon opposite Grand Valley State in a doubleheader that is set to begin at 3 p.m.
