Zirolli Breaks Home Run Record; Baseball Takes Two From Bloomsburg on Friday

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The West Chester University baseball hosted their final home doubleheader of the season on Friday, as the Golden Rams welcomed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) divisional rival Bloomsburg University to town for a key PSAC twin bill.

Senior Joe Zirolli (KENNETT, PA./KENNETT SQUARE) hit his 14th long ball of the season to pass Nick Ward (2018), Matt Baer (2010), and Blair Dameron (2009) for No. 1 on West Chester's single-season home runs list in a 4-3 WCU victory to start the day, before the Golden Rams hung eight on the Huskies in the first inning en route to a 12-3 victory to cap off the evening.

With the two wins, West Chester has now won each of its last five contests and improves to 27-13 overall behind a 17-9 mark in league action. Following two East Stroudsburg victories over Shippensburg today, the Golden Rams and ESU are now tied for third in the PSAC East at 17-9, while Bloomsburg (31-12) continues to hold on to the No. 2 spot with an 18-8 record in conference outings. Depending on how tomorrow plays out, the Golden Rams could head into the 2019 PSAC Championship seeded anywhere between second and fourth in the East.

GAME ONE: West Chester - 4 | Bloomsburg – 3
  • West Chester starter Zach Rice (HONEY BROOK, PA./TWIN VALLEY) was dealing early, as the sophomore fanned two Huskies in the top of the first to keep the game scoreless.
  • In the bottom of the first, Jared Melone (NORTH WALES, PA./NORTH PENN) singled with two outs before advancing to second on a passed ball. Zirolli walked to put two runners on and designated hitter Michael Krusinki (MEDFORD, NJ/BISHOP EUSTACE PREP) followed with a single to score Melone while Zirolli came home following an error by Bloomsburg's right fielder.
  • Both teams went hitless across the next two innings, and the score remained 2-0 in favor of the Golden Rams.
  • Up 2-0 in the fourth, Zach Wright (BURLINGTON COUNTRY, NJ/NORTHERN BURLINGTON COUNTY REGIONAL) singled in Luke Cantwell (BROOMALL, PA./MARPLE NEWTOWN), who reach on an error, to push WCU's advantage to 3-0 heading into the fifth frame.
  • With two outs and nobody on in the fifth, Zirolli stepped to the dish a sent a shot over the left field wall to put the Golden Rams up 4-0, giving the senior his program record 14th dinger of the season.
  • Bloomsburg made it interest with three runs in the top of the sixth, but closer Nick Picariello (PHILADELPHIA, PA./GERMANTOWN ACADEMY) came in and held the Huskies hitless in the seventh to give the sophomore his first save of the season.
Zirolli went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one historic homer in game one, while Krusinki added one hit, one walk and a RBI to start the day.

On the mound, Rice (5-2) got the win after allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.
 
GAME TWO: West Chester – 12 | Bloomsburg – 3
  • WCU starter Jon Fisher (PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA./PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH) sat down two of the first three batters he faced on Friday to keep BU off the board in the first.
  • West Chester recorded seven of its 13 total hits in the bottom of the first, and with the help of two costly Bloomsburg errors, the Golden Rams dropped eight in the frame to take a comfortable 8-run lead into the second stanza.
  • Both teams combined for just three hits across the next 3.5 innings of action and the scoreboard read 8-2 in favor of the Purple & Gold entering the bottom of the sixth.
  • Kyle Feaster (TROOPER, PA./METHACTION) led off the bottom of the sixth with a double before being brought home following a RBI double by Melone.
  • With two outs, Cantwell singled in Melone from third and Zirolli was able to come home following a passed ball.
  • Catcher Corey Webb (EASTON, PA./EASTON) then stepped to the dish and brought the score to 12-2 after singling in Cantwell from second.
  • Michael Deitz (AVON GROVE, PA./AVON GROVE) came on the seventh and allowed just two hits in the frame to seal the 12-3 victory for the Golden Rams in the nightcap.
Webb, Cantwell, Zirolli, and Melone all notched two hits in game two, while Zirolli and Justin Horn (WILLOW GROVE, PA./UPPER DUBLIN) both contributed two RBI.

Fisher improved to 6-3 on the year after holding Bloomsburg to two just runs (both earned) on two hits with four K's in 6.0 innings.
