Volleyball Coasts To 11-0 Start

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - West Chester Volleyball has won its first 11 matches for the second season in a row, winning two more over Caldwell University and Southern Connecticut State University on Friday at the East Stroudsburg Invitational.
 
The Golden Rams won their first 14 matches last season. Their 15-0 start in 2007 was their best under 14th-year head coach Kassie Bellaver. The Golden Rams play Stonehill College and Jefferson University on Saturday at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. to conclude their time at the East Stroudsburg Invitational before beginning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play.


Match One: West Chester 3, Caldwell 0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-19)
 
The Golden Rams trailed 15-12 before 13 of the last 17 points in the first set. The second set was the same story, as West Chester came from behind after trailing 8-1. However, WCU jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the third set and never looked back.
 
West Chester hit .395 as a team in this one. Sophomore Grace Whitney (Glenside, Pa. / Abington) had 13 kills, sophomore Sarah Polacek (Johnstown, Pa. / Westomont Hilltop) had 11 and freshman Hailey Lewis (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West) had nine. Lewis had a .643 hitting percentage with four total blocks.
 
Freshman Jillian Borgerding continued to produce at the setter position with 36 assists.


Match Two: West Chester 3, Southern Connecticut 1 (25-17, 25-14, 22-25, 25-23)
 
West Chester won the first two sets with ease but let the third one slip away by losing the final five points. The two teams were also tied at 21 in the fourth set, but West Chester pulled away in the end.
 
Polacek added another 16 kills against SCSU, and sophomore Julia Vreeswek had 13.
 
Borgerding supplied the team with 43 assists, three kills and six digs.
 
Graduate student Shaye Whiteman (Gettysburg, Pa/ Gettyburg) and sophomore Maddy Moore (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North) led the team in digs with 16 and 12, respectively.
