WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Katie Thompson (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) scored a pair of goals, and freshman goalkeeper Claire Nielsen (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus) registered her second straight shutout to lead No. 2 West Chester to a 5-0 shutout over No. 10 Indiana (Pa.) Saturday evening at Vonnie Gros Field.
West Chester ran its season-opening win streak to five with the non-league win while handing IUP (4-1) its first loss of the season.
How it Happened:
- After a scoreless first quarter, the Golden Rams offense came alive quickly in the second as Thompson scored in the 17th minute, giving West Chester the lead. Thompson would go on to score again in the 27th minute to give West Chester a 2-0 lead. Her goals were assisted by Emma Velez (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Caitie McNamara (Buderim, Australia), respectively.
- West Chester remained on the offensive in the third quarter as Kat Roncoroni (Lebanon Twp., N.J./Voorhees) and Caitlin Kelly (Coatesville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) each tallied a goal to increase the lead. Roncoroni's goal was assisted by Danielle Venter (Auckland, New Zeland) while Sophie Ruppert (Manheim, Germany) assisted Kelly's goal.
- McNamara closed out the goal scoring in the fourth quarter, scoring the fifth and final goal for the Golden Rams. Sydney Ostroski (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) picked up the assist on the goal.
Inside the Numbers:
- Today's game was personal for senior Caitlin Kelly. Kelly's sister, Kimberly, is a senior on IUP's field hockey team and started today for the Crimson Hawks.
- West Chester is now 5-0 on the season and have outscored their opponents 17-3.
- Nielsen recorded her second consecutive shutout, both having occurred against top 10 nationally-ranked teams.
