Chaves Stands Out, No. 17 Golden Rams Fall At No. 6 Nova Southeastern

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - No. 17-ranked West Chester University men's swimming took one last stop before heading home from its winter break trip in Florida and lost to Nova Southeastern, 145.5-59.5, on Friday.
 
Junior Leo Chaves (Brazil) took first place in the 100-meter backstroke in 53 seconds and second in the 100 medley in 52.48 seconds. He also joined senior Sean Bell (Columbia, S.C. / Dallastown), junior Jarod Anderson (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) and senior Joao Pedro Barreto (Niteroi, Brazil) to earn second in the 200 medley relay in 1:32.70.
 
Sophomore Collin Pettit (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) placed second in the 1,000 freestyle in 9:43.01.
 
Barreto also competed in the 200 relay with freshman Tyler Hall (Lansdale, Pa. / North Penn), sophomore Logan Brockway (York, Pa. / Dallastown) and senior Olivier Nguyen (West Chester, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan). That squad took second place in 1:24.34.
 
West Chester's next meet is at home on January 18 against New York University.
