Softball Completes Two-Game Sweep Versus West Virginia State

GLENVILLE, W. Va. After a day of home runs, West Chester played small ball to beat West Virginia State 6-5 on Sunday. Following the victory, West Chester improved to 4-3 on the season while West Virginia State dropped to 9-12.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • West Chester got on board first in the top of the second, as Olivia Mock (Clifton, Va. / Paul V. Catholic) hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Caroline Adams (Media, Pa. / Renaissance Academy) from third, giving West Chester the 1-0 lead.
  • Trisha Kopinetz (Pine Grove, Pa. / Pine Grove) and Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa. / Kutztown) each hit RBI singles to help West Chester increase their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning. Emily Kim (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright), Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep), and Bri Garber (Willow Street, Pa. / Lampeter-Strasburg) each scored.
  • West Virginia State scored one run on a fielder's choice to cut West Chester's lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Madison Melvin (Tabernacle, N. J. / Seneca) hit an infield single in the top of the sixth, scoring Kim. Melvin then got caught in a run-down, during which Mock snuck across the plate to increase West Chester's lead to 6-1.
  • West Virginia State attempted to rally in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs, but failed to catch up to West Chester.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Reilly Gearhart (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) earned the victory on the mound, pitching 5 1/3 innings while allowing four runs on four hits.
  • Jen Hanshaw (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) earned the save pitching the final 1 2/3 innings for West Chester. She kept West Virginia State to one run on three hits.
  • Shortstop Emily Kim went 2-for-3 on the day and scored two runs for West Chester.
 
Following today's games, West Chester will return to action next Saturday as the team begins it's spring break schedule in Jan Phyl Village, Fla.
