Kavanagh Pitches Shutout as West Chester Defeats Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W. Va. West Chester softball wrapped up an undefeated weekend on Sunday with a 5-0 victory over Glenville State. Following the win, West Chester improves to 5-3 on the season while Glenville State falls to 4-5.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After four scoreless innings, West Chester broke the ice in the bottom of the fifth with a four-run inning. Trisha Kopinetz (Pine Grove, Pa. / Pine Grove) hit a two-RBI double with the bases loaded to score Madison Melvin (Tabernacle, N. J. / Seneca) and Annamarie Hartman (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep). In the next plate appearance, Courtney Stump (Kutztown, Pa. / Kutztown) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Bri Garber ((Willow Street, Pa. / Lampeter-Strasburg) from third. Jaime Klemas (South Brunswick, N.J. / South Brunswick) wrapped up scoring in the inning with an RBI single to score Kopinetz.
  • Hartman hit a leadoff double to start off the bottom of the sixth inning. After a sacrifice bunt from Melvin moved Hartman up to third, she scored on an RBI infield single by Emily Maseth (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) to give West Chester the 5-0 lead.
  • Maegen Kavanagh (Easton, Pa. / Easton) dominated all day long and closed the book on her complete game shutout with her ninth strikeout in the top of the seventh.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Kavanagh went the whole nine yards in her complete game shutout, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out nine batters.
  • Kopinetz went 3-for-4 with two RBI's and one run scored for the Golden Rams.
  • Hartman went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
 
OUTSIDE THE BOX:
  • Freshman catcher Trisha Kopinetz closed out her historic weekend having gone 8-for-12 with three home runs. She was responsible for many of West Chester's runs this weekend and scored five runs with six RBI's.
  • After earning two hits today, Bri Garber now stands four hits away from tying Erin MacNamee's program record for most career hits.
 
Following today's games, West Chester will return to action next Saturday as the team begins it's spring break schedule in Jan Phyl Village, Fla.
