WCU Men Swim & Dive To Wins Over Ship and SCSU in Opener

WEST CHESTER, PA – Ben Desclous (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) was a triple winner as West Chester University's men's swimming & diving squad picked up a pair of victories opening the 2021-22 winter season at Graham Natatorium Friday afternoon.

West Chester topped Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival Shippensburg, 189.5-80.5, and downed Southern Connecticut State, 208-60.

For the first time in 622 days, the Golden Rams jumped back in the Graham Natatorium swimming pool for an intercollegiate competition, and the fans in attendance were treated to an outstanding performance from the men.

Diver Carter Smith (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions to pace the Golden Rams' effort up at the Ronn Jenkins Aquatics Center on North Campus.  

Desclous won the 200-yard butterfly, the 200 individual medley and the 200 backstroke Friday. Meanwhile Nolan Benner (Green Lane, Pa./Boyertown) won the 50 freestyle and tied for first in the 100 free. He also anchored the 200 medley relay that was a winner and helped the 400 free relay close the meet with a win. 

Joel Dunnigan (York, Pa./Dallastown) won the 100 butterfly, Maxwell Bachman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) the 500 free, Dalton Fink (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) captured the 100 back while leading off the 200 medley relay. and Brody Heckman (Reading, Pa./Wilson) the 200 free to round out West Chester's individual winners Friday.

The men return to action next Saturday when West Chester travels to New York University for a meet that begins at 11:30 a.m.
