Goitia Lifts Men's Soccer to OT Victory Over Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- The West Chester men's soccer team (3-0-1, 3-0-0 PSAC) returned to action on Saturday evening on the road at Shippensburg (3-3-2, 2-3-0 PSAC), looking to extend its winning streak to three in a row. West Chester led for much of the contest after opening the scoring early in the first half, but the Golden Rams needed overtime to earn a narrow 2-1 victory over Shippensburg on Saturday night.

West Chester opened the scoring early as Craig Potts (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) found the back of the net just five minutes into the contest off an assist from Kendall Walkes (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) following a corner kick to give the Golden Rams an early 1-0 lead.

This early lead held for the duration of the first half as the Purple and Gold carried a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

West Chester outshot Shippensburg by a 10-5 margin during the first half of play while also out-cornering the Raiders by a 6-1 margin through the opening 45 minutes of action.

After battling throughout the second half, Shippensburg found the equalizer it was seeking in the 89th minute to even the score at 1-1 and force overtime.

Just 2:23 into the extra session, Doug Goitia (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) came through for the Golden Rams, scoring the overtime game-winner to lift West Chester to the 2-1 road victory over Shippensburg.
Daniel Good (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) got the start in goal for West Chester once again on Saturday night and went the distance between the pipes, making six saves to limit the Shippensburg offense in the Golden Ram victory.

West Chester ended the contest with an 8-5 advantage in corners, while Shippensburg used a big second half, which saw them outshoot the Golden Rams by a 13-6 margin to end the contest with a slim 18-17 advantage in shots.

West Chester will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon at home against Bloomsburg, with that contest set to begin at 1 p.m.
