BLOOMSBURG, Pa.- Fresh off a four-set victory over Lock Haven on Friday evening, the West Chester women's volleyball team returned to action on Saturday afternoon against PSAC foe Bloomsburg. After dropping the first set by the narrowest of margins, West Chester took the next three sets to win the match by a 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-18, 25-11) to improve to 10-3 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in league play.
In the first set, West Chester and Bloomsburg engaged in a back-and-forth affair but it was the Huskies who escaped with the opening set victory thanks to a late-set run, which enabled them to earn the 26-24 win to go up 1-0 in the match.
In the second set, West Chester and Bloomsburg continued to trade runs but it was a 6-2 run by West Chester late in the set, which put the Golden Rams out in front by a score of 22-17. With this five-point lead in hand, West Chester held off Bloomsburg and captured the second set 25-21 to even the match at 1-1.
West Chester and Bloomsburg continued to trade points throughout much of the early going of the third set but it was a 8-0 run by the Golden Rams, which allowed the visitors to claim an 18-9 lead in the late stages of the est. Bloomsburg worked to rally back late in the set but the earlier run by the Golden Rams was sufficient to allow them to earn the 25-18 set victory over the Huskies.
The Golden Rams jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the early stages of the fourth set and never relinquished their advantage as they did not permit the Huskies to come back within three points for the duration of the set en route to the 25-11 fourth set victory and 3-1 match triumph.
Julia Vreeswyk (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Sarah Polacek (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont HIlltop) led the way for the Golden Rams in kills with 16 and 14, respectively while Vreeswyk also led the way in blocks with five on the match.
Jamie Byrne (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty turned in another double-double performance with a team-best 35 assists and 16 digs.
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) led the way in digs for the Golden Rams once again with 21 digs in the four-set victory while also registering a team-high four aces.
West Chester will be back in action on Tuesday night as the Golden Rams continue their road trip with a visit to Lincoln with that match set to begin at 6 p.m.
