WEST CHESTER, Pa.- Following a 3-1 victory over Bloomsburg earlier in the day, the West Chester women's volleyball team (20-5) returned to action against D'youville in the final game of a tri-match inside Hollinger Field House. West Chester swept its guests from New York, winning 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-18) to improve to 20-5 on the season.
In the first set, West Chester raced out to a 15-1 lead to open the first set en route to a 25-13 first set to take the early 1-0 lead in the match.
D'youville opened the second set with an impressive 8-3 run before the Golden Rams countered with an 8-2 run to take a 11-10 lead midway through the second set. The two teams traded runs as West Chester and D'youville were tied at 19-19 late in the set before West Chester closed on a 6-1 run to take the second set by a final of 25-20.
In the third set, West Chester and D'youville traded points early as the score was tied at 5-5 before D'youville went on a 12-5 run to take a 17-10 lead midway through the set. West Chester countered with an 11-0 run, which allowed the Golden Rams to erase the deficit and take a 21-17 lead late in the set. West Chester closed out the match with a 4-1 run to take the third set by a 25-18 final and take the match by a 3-0 final.
Grace Whitney (Glenside, Pa./Abington) and
Sarah Polacek (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) led the team in kills with nine kills each while
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) led the way in aces with eight while also registering eight digs.
Jamie Byrne (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) contributed in her usual way with a team-best 19 assists while
Olivia Rudjord (Fogelsville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) posted a team-best three blocks in the victory.
West Chester will be back in action on Friday night at East Stroudsburg with that contest beginning at 7 p.m.
