SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V.- Looking for its 10
th victory in as many tries, the West Chester women's volleyball team (12-4, 3-1) took to the road on Friday evening to visit PSAC foe Shepherd. West Chester battled throughout but Shepherd captured the victory, winning the match by a final of 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) to improve to 15-1 on the year overall and remain a perfect 4-0 in PSAC play.
In the first set, Shepherd got out to an early 11-6 lead over West Chester, which it would never relinquish en route to a 25-18 first set victory.
In the second set, West Chester remained well within striking distance throughout much of the set as the score was 17-14 in favor of Shepherd, just past the midway point of the set. Shepherd went on a 4-1 run to open up a 21-15 lead over the Golden Rams, which proved sufficient as the Rams held on for the 25-17 second set victory, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, West Chester jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before Shepherd was able to respond with an 11-4 run to take a 14-10 lead midway through the set. With its four-point lead, Shepherd was able to extend its advantage to earn the third set victory by a 25-16 final score to take the match by a final of 3-0.
Julia Vreeswyk (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led the way for the Golden Rams offensively with nine kills while
Jamie Byrne (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) posted a team-best 24 assists while also ending her evening second on the squad in digs with nine.
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) led the team in digs with 10 as she eclipsed the 200-dig plateau for the season.
West Chester will be back in action tomorrow afternoon on the road at Shippensburg with that match set to begin at 1 p.m.
