KUTZTOWN, Pa.- The West Chester women's volleyball team (21-6, 9-3 PSAC) returned to action on Saturday afternoon against Kutztown looking to avoid a losing streak, having dropped a hard fought match to East Stroudsburg on Friday night. West Chester earned a hard-fought victory in the first set and used this momentum to roll to a 3-0 (28-26, 25-13, 25-18) match victory over Kutztown.
In the first set, West Chester jumped out to an early 8-3 lead and led for much of the opening set before Kutztown rallied to take its first lead of the set in the late stages, which would eventually turn into a 23-22 lead late in the set. West Chester ensured that its early set lead would not go to waste as the Golden Rams closed out the set with a 28-26 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, West Chester jumped out to an early lead once again, taking a 10-3 lead over Kutztown, which it would not relinquish en route to a 25-13 second set victory, which gave West Chester a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
During the third set, West Chester once again raced out to an early 9-3 lead before Kutztown pulled back within two points making the score 17-15 late in the set. West Chester closed out the match with an 8-3 run, which gave them the third set victory by a 25-18 final and a 3-0 match win.
Julia Vreeswyk (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had a big afternoon as she tied for the team lead with nine kills while
Maria Harding (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) added nine kills of her own.
Jamie Byrne (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led the way in assists with 32 while
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) posted a team-best 32 digs in the victory.
West Chester will be back in action next Friday evening vs Shepherd beginning at 7 p.m. as the Golden Rams embark upon their final weekend of regular season action inside Hollinger Field House.
