Top-Ranked West Chester Rolls Past Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md.-Valerie Van Kuijck (Denbosch, The Netherlands/Pierson School) scored a pair of goals as top-ranked West Chester (9-1) bounced back from its first setback of the season with a 3-0 road victory over Frostburg State (7-5) on Sunday evening.

West Chester controlled possession throughout the game, ending the contest with a 22-0 advantage in shots and a 13-0 lead in shots on goal to go along with a 8-0 advantage in corners.

Despite a scoreless first quarter, West Chester began applying pressure to the Frostburg defense early, taking six shots in the opening 15 minutes with two of those six finding their way on goal.

Continuing its early pressure from the end of the first quarter, West Chester opened the scoring just one minute into the second quarter when Olivia Quagliero (Southhampton, N.J./Seneca) found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Caitlynn Szarko (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) to give WCU an early 1-0 lead. West Chester doubled its lead seven minutes later after Valerie Van Kuijck (Denbosch, The Netherlands/Pierson School) off an assist from Ella Shockley to give the Golden Rams a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

Coming out of the halftime break, West Chester added its third goal of the game just 27 seconds into the half when Van Kuijck scored her second of the game to give the Purple and Gold a commanding 3-0 lead.

West Chester threatened to add another goal in the waning moments of regulation, but the Frostburg State defense was up to the task, keeping the score locked at 3-0 in favor of the Golden Rams.

Megan Gula (Lincoln University, Pa./Avon Grove) had a quiet night in goal, as she did not face a shot in the shutout victory while her counterpart, Madison Manalansan was busy throughout the evening for the Bobcats, making 10 saves to slow the ever dangerous West Chester offense, which has been no small task throughout the 2022 campaign.
