No. 22 West Chester Downs Frostburg State, 9-4

CARY, NCZack Wright (Columbus, N.J./No. Burlington County Regional) had three hits and scored three runs while Mike Ferrara (Jamison, Pa./Archbishop Wood) knocked in three runs without having a hit as West Chester topped Frostburg State, 9-4, at the DII Baseball Challenge at the U.S. Baseball Training Complex Saturday night.
 
West Chester (7-2) ended a two-game losing streak at the DII Baseball Challenge, scoring nine runs on six singles. Frostburg State (8-2) dropped just its second game on the young season.
 
The Golden Rams plated a pair of runs in each of the first, second, fifth and sixth innings, before picking up an insurance tally in the eighth. Frostburg, which fell behind 4-0 after two frames, tied the game with a four-run third. But, West Chester's pitching shut down its opponent the rest of the way. WCU scored nine runs on six hits and made one error while Frostburg State scored four runs on nine hits and one error.
 
Joe Sperone (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) improved to 3-0 on the year, picking up the win. He went six innings and scattered eight hits, allowing four runs. He walked one and struck out five. Nolan Graber (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) pitched the final three innings to register his first save as a Golden Ram. He surrendered just one hit and struck out four without allowing a run.
 
Wright finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Corey Stouffer (Souderton, Pa./North Penn) was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs and a pair of stolen bases. West Chester batters worked 10 walks into their 41 plate appearances.
 
West Chester opens its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division schedule Friday on the road at Lock Haven for a 2 p.m. start. The two rivals will then play a doubleheader at Serpico Stadium on Saturday for the Golden Rams' home opener and first games on its home field since March 1, 2020.
