Women's Volleyball Surges Past Holy Family in Non-League Action

WEST CHESTER, Pa.-Brynn Dreisbach (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Hailey Lewis (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) tied for the team lead in kills with 10 kills each to help lead West Chester (5-0) to a 3-0 victory in non-league action over Holy Family (0-5).

West Chester opened the match with a quick kill from freshman Brynn Dreisbach (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) but Holy Family countered quickly and eventually took an 8-5 lead early in the first set. Holy Family continued to hold a narrow lead over the next few points, but West Chester was able to even the score at 13-13 and prompt a quick Holy Family timeout. The Golden Rams and Tigers continued to trade points before a quick 2-0 run from the visitors gave them a 20-18 lead and prompted a West Chester timeout late in the set. Trailing 22-19 late in the set, West Chester rallied back behind an ace from Ali Miller (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) before a quick kill by Lex Caltabiano (Woolwich Twp, N.J./Gloucester County Institute of Technology) restored a one-point Golden Ram lead (23-22). Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) closed out the first set with a kill as the Golden Rams took the opening set by a 26-24 final.
After a tight first set, West Chester took little time to take control of the second set, opening the set with a 6-2 run thanks in part to a pair of kills by senior Hailey Lewis (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West). West Chester eventually stretched its lead to 13-6, which led to Holy Family burning its first timeout of the second set. Out of the timeout, West Chester continued to stretch its lead, eventually taking a 16-7 lead before Holy Family answered with a small run to trim the Golden Ram lead to 19-13 late in the second, prompting a West Chester timeout. The Golden Ram timeout seemed to serve its purpose as West Chester came out of the timeout with a quick 2-0 run, highlighted by a kill by Lewis to take a 21-13 advantage late in the set. West Chester closed out the second set with a 25-19 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Following a script somewhat similar to the Golden Rams in the second set, Holy Family raced out to an early 6-0 lead prompting a quick WCU timeout. The timeout once again served its purpose nicely for the Golden Rams as Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) quickly halted the run with a kill to make the score 6-1.  West Chester continued its comeback bid, eventually evening the score at 14-14. Later in the set, West Chester was able to retake the lead, making the score 20-19 for its first lead of the set. West Chester eventually stretched its lead to 24-21 before eventually taking the third set by a 25-22 final.
Borgerding and Dreisbach tied for the team in aces with two each while Jamie Byrne (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) contributed in her usual way with 38 assists in the victory. Heffner, who registered a kill to close out the first set victory, tied for the team lead in digs with eight in the 3-0 triumph.

As a unit. West Chester hit .243 on the night with the best set of the evening being the first set, which saw the Golden Rams hit .316 while holding Holy Family to a .181 hitting percentage on the night.
