WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The 16th-ranked West Chester women's soccer squad (2-0-0, 1-0-0) earned its first conference victory of the young season over Shippensburg by a final of 1-0 thanks to
Alyson Cutter's (Warrington, PA / Central Bucks South) successful first half penalty kick on Wednesday afternoon.
The Raiders applied pressure early in the first half, outshooting the Golden Rams 2-1 through the opening 10 minutes but West Chester answered back reversing that for the remainder of the first half, slowing the Shippensburg offense while outshooting the Raiders 6-4 over the final 35 minutes.
Kaitlynn Haughey (Philadelphia, PA / Penn Charter) knocked on Shippensburg's door in the 26th minute, but the shot was punched just over the crossbar by Raiders goalie, Morgan Molyneaux.
Cutter scored on a penalty kick in the 40th minute to put the Golden Rams on the board after getting fouled in the box to give West Chester a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Rams maintained their 1-0 lead in the second half, controlled possession throughout much of the second half, outshooting their guests by an 11-4 margin to earn the victory.
In the 84th minute, Shippensburg generated perhaps its best opportunity of the match when Skylar Lambert got on the end of a corner kick and nearly converted but a Golden Ram defender was there to clear the ball to safety.
West Chester topped Shippensburg in shots 18-10 and corners 8-4. Golden Rams goalie
Hayley McGee (Mechanicsburg, PA / Cumberland Valley) made four saves in the 90 minutes.
The Golden Rams return to action September 3rd on the road at Bloomsburg starting at 5 p.m.
