WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The West Chester women's volleyball team (10-1) returned home on Saturday afternoon to host a tri-match against Nyack and Lincoln. West Chester made short work of each of its Saturday opponents defeating Nyack by a final of 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-22) before dispatching Lincoln by a final of 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-17).
Match 1: WCU 3 Nyack 0
West Chester wasted little time in getting out to an early lead, outscoring Nyack 8-2 over the first 10 points of the match before eventually stretching its advantage to 15-8 midway through the opening set. West Chester eventually stretched its lead to 24-12 after a kill by senior captain
Hailey Lewis (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) before closing out the first set on a Nyack attack error to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, West Chester and Nyack traded points early and it was the Golden Rams who held a slim 8-6 lead in the early stages of the first set. After cutting the Golden Ram lead to 11-10, West Chester went on a 10-1 run to take a commanding 21-11 lead late in the second set. Lewis increased the lead to 22-11, prompting a quick Nyack timeout as the Warriors looked to halt the Golden Ram momentum. The timeout did its job at least initially, as the Warriors countered with a 4-0 run but West Chester held on to close out the second set with a 25-16 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was a much tighter affair as Nyack and West Chester traded points throughout and the Warriors even managed to hold a brief lead early in the set before the Golden Rams pulled away to a 25-22 third-set victory and a 3-0 match win.
Tori Wright (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) led the way for West Chester with nine kills while Lewis finished with seven kills of her own. Lewis also led the team in blocks with three while
Jamie Byrne (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) led the way in aces with six and assists with 19.
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) posted two aces of her own while leading the team in digs with 11 in the three-set triumph.
As a team, West Chester hit .165 on the match while holding Lock Haven to just .036 on the match, including a -.029 effort in the second set win.
Match 2: WCU 3 Lincoln 0
West Chester and Lincoln traded points throughout much of the early going of the first set but it was West Chester who managed to end the opening set with a 25-18 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
After a tight first set, West Chester wasted little time in jumping out to an early lead, outscoring Lincoln 7-0 to open the set and prompt a quick Lions timeout. West Chester stretched its lead into a 25-13 second set victory and 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set opened with West Chester and Lincoln trading points through the early going once again but it was West Chester who utilized a mid-set run to pull away and take the third set by a 25-17 third set victory and a 3-0 match win to improve to 10-1 on the year.
Brynn Dreisbach (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) led the way in kills with eight while
Elise Smith (New Market, Md./Oakdale) finished with seven kills of her own in the three-set victory. Byrne led the way in assists with 21 while Heffner posted a team-best 10 digs in the victory. Smith also tied with
Nicole Dimiris (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) for the team lead in blocks with three each while Byrne and
Jillian Borgerding (Highlands Ranch, Co./Highlands Ranch) tied for the team lead in aces with three each.
As a team, West Chester hit .316 on the match while holding Lincoln to a hitting percentage of just .133 on the match.
