SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- Following a 3-0 win over Chestnut Hill in non-league action on Wednesday night, the West Chester University women's volleyball team (8-8, 2-4) jumped back into PSAC play on Friday evening with a road test at Shippensburg (14-6, 5-1). West Chester battled throughout the evening but fell to the host Raiders by a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-8) final.
In the opening set, West Chester found itself behind early but mounted a comeback effort early to trail by just two (12-10) following an ace by
Hailey Lewis (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West), but the Raiders closed the set well, finishing with a 25-17 victory to open the match.
West Chester started quickly in the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead and leading 15-12 entering the late stages of the set. Shippensburg closed out the set well again, finishing on a 13-6 run to earn a 25-21 comeback victory over the Golden Rams, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
With a 2-0 lead heading to the third set, Shippensburg opened on an 8-1 run and used this early surge to roll to a 25-8 third-set victory and a 3-0 win.
Wright led all Golden Rams in kills with seven, while Lewis and
Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) each came away with four kills in the setback.
Megan St. Jean (Eaton, Co./Eaton) posted a team-best 11 assists and an ace, while
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) led the team in digs with eight in the setback.
Kat Negron and Gracen Nutt led the way for Shippensburg, finishing with 14 and 11 kills, respectively, while Emily Gardner posted a team-high 13 digs to slow the West Chester attack. Kaitlyn Townsend also finished with a match-high five blocks and six kills in the victory over the Golden Rams.
