No. 8/10 West Chester Tops D’Youville, 5-1

GLENVILLE, WV – Starting pitcher, left-hander Andrew Cantwell (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown), allowed just one run on seven hits over 6.1 innings to lead No. 8/10 West Chester to a 5-1 non-league victory over D'Youville Friday evening at Sue Morris Complex.

Cantwell (2-0) struck out six and did not walk a batter in keeping D'Youville off balance all game. J.R. Gifford (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI while teammates Joe Kaleck (Southampton, Pa./Neshaminy) and Sean Szestowicki (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) each had a pair of hits to lead the squad offensively.

West Chester (4-1) scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to break open a 1-0 ballgame. Gifford hit a two-run single in the sixth, and Zack Miles (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) scored a run on a fielder's choice while Kaleck scored on an error in the seventh. From there, the game was handed over to the bullpen and Joe Messina (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) and Evan Snyder (Cheyney, Pa./Rustin). That duo did not allow a run or a hit in 2.2 innings of work combined.

Evan Profy (Croydan, Pa./Harry S. Truman) singled home Gifford in the third inning with the first run of the game. West Chester scored five runs on 11 singles and made one error. They stole eight bases. D'Youville (0-2) scored one run on seven hits and committed three errors.

The Golden Rams will be back in action Saturday afternoon with a single game against Mercyhurst. That game has been moved around quite a bit and will now be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday at West Virginia University.
