MILLERSVILLE, Pa.-Playing in its third PSAC East doubleheader in as many days, West Chester (17-10, 5-1) returned to action against Millersville (13-12, 2-4) on Tuesday afternoon in its first road conference games of the year. West Chester used a mid-game rally to earn a 5-4 victory in game one before rolling past the Marauders for a 9-1 game two victory.
Game One: WCU 5 Millersville 4
Millersville jumped out to an early lead in game one, inching ahead in the first with an RBI double to carry a 1-0 lead into the second.
The score stood at 1-0 in favor of the Marauders until the fourth, when West Chester exploded for five runs thanks to an RBI single by
Olivia Mock (Clifton, Va./Paul V) and an RBI triple by
Cyd Keidaisch (Pottstown, Pa./Boyertown) along with a series of defensive miscues by the Marauders to take a 5-1 lead.
Millersville countered with three runs in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 5-4 entering the late innings. This is as close as the Marauders would get as West Chester closed out the game one victory.
Danielle Ciliberto (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) (6-2) got the start and her sixth win of the season after pitching 4.1 strong innings, scattering four runs on seven hits while striking out five.
Makenzie Edwards (Atco, N.J./Hammonton) entered in relief and picked up the save, pitching the final 2.2, scattering just two hits while striking out four to secure the victory.
Game Two: WCU 9 Millersville 1 (5 Innings)
West Chester jumped out to an early lead in the second game of the doubleheader, as
Grace Aguilar (Frederica, Del./Lake Forest) came through with an RBI bunt to score
Madison Melvin (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca). Hailey Melvin (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) followed this up with an RBI single to drive in
Katelyn Rittenbaugh (Donaldson, Pa./Pine Grove), which extended the lead to 2-0.
West Chester added two more runs in the third via an RBI double by Aguilar and a sac fly from
Abigail Quinn (Cheltenham, Pa./William Penn Charter) to take a 4-0 lead.
Millersville chipped away at the deficit in the fourth with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-1.
West Chester added another five runs in the top of the fifth via RBI singles from Quinn, Melvin, and
Casey Best (Wilmington, Del./Concord), along with a fielder's choice off the bat of
Hailey Melvin and a passed ball to take a 9-1 lead.
Needing just three outs to end the game early,
Samantha Klug (East Norriton, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) got the final three outs of the game quickly, improving to 5-2 on the year as she allowed just one unearned run on two hits while striking out four in the victory.
