J.R. Gifford (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) hit a three-run home run, and
Joe Kaleck (Southampton, Pa./Neshaminy) hit a two-run double, as West Chester opened its four-game weekend series at the U.S. Baseball National Training Center with a 17-0 victory over Saint Anselm Friday afternoon.
West Chester (7-1) blew the game open with a seven-run seventh inning, and starting pitcher
David Ferguson (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) was spectacular in throwing seven shutout frames against Saint Anselm (1-10).
The Golden Rams scored seven in the seventh, four more in the eighth and two in the ninth to pull away from the Hawks. Kaleck finished with two doubles and five RBI on the day.
Corey Stouffer (Souderton, Pa./North Penn) was 3-for-4. He started off the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth that plated
Luke Cantwell (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown).
Evan Profy (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and RBI.
Cantwell was officially 2-for-3 and scored three times. In seven plate appearances he had two hits, but set a new school record for being hit by a pitch four times in one game.
Ferguson scattered four hits over his seven innings of work while striking out eight.
Jeb Kurtz (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) and
Stephen Restuccio (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) each tossed one inning of relief.
West Chester faces Saint Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) in a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch for game one will be at noon.
