West Chester Holds Off No. 8 Millersville, 6-5

MILLERSVILLE, PA – The top two batters in West Chester's order were a combined 6-for-10 with five RBI as the Golden Rams rolled into Cooper Park and came away with a 6-5 victory over eighth-ranked Millersville Thursday afternoon.

Evan Profy (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) and Joe Kaleck (Southampton, Pa./Neshaminy) provided the big hits in the second and seventh, and Dave Ferguson (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) closed out the contest for his fifth save to give the visitors a key win in the first game of a three-game weekend series.

Profy hit a two-run triple in the top of the second, and Kaleck then singled him home to put West Chester in front 3-1. Millersville, which had jumped out in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first, put up a tally in the second and another in the third to tie the game at 3-3. The Marauders took the lead in the sixth. However, the Golden Rams slapped another three-spot up in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead.

This time, Kaleck was the hero with a two-run double. John DeMucci (Swarthmore, Pa./Msgr. Bonner & Prendie) singled home Kaleck. Millersville fought back with one more in the eighth and put the lead runner on base in the ninth. But, DeMucci cut down a pinch runner, and Ferguson did the rest to preserve the win.

Ferguson tossed 2.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out one. Julian Costa (Mantua, N.J./Clearview) started and picked up his fourth win of the season. He lasted six innings, yielding four runs, three of them earned, on six hits while walking three and striking out five.

West Chester and Millersville will finish their series Friday at Serpico Stadium. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
