Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Halts Losing Streak with 3-1 Victory over Kutztown

WEST CHESTER, Pa.-Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) led all players in kills with 14 to help guide the West Chester University women's volleyball team (9-10, 2-5) to a 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 25-15) victory over Kutztown (1-19, 0-7) on Saturday afternoon in Hollinger Field House.

West Chester hit well throughout the match on Saturday afternoon to halt its four-match losing streak, hitting .516 in the second set and a blistering .565 in the fourth set to close the match.

CeCe Isenberg (Beriwkc, Pa./Berwick) finished second on the team in kills with 11, while Nicole Dimiris (Hockessin, Del./Saint Mark's) hit an outstanding .818 with nine kills on 11 swings in the victory.

Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) finished with 11 digs, while Anna Richardson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) picked up a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs of her own. Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) also recorded a double-double in the streak-snapping victory, finishing with 46 assists and 11 digs, along with four kills and an ace. Zoe Brown (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) led the way in aces with four as one of four Golden Rams to record an ace in the victory.

West Chester trailed for much of the first set, finding itself behind 17-13 in the late stages before going on an 11-2 run to flip the set and take a 24-19 lead late. This five-point lead proved important as Kutztown mounted a late comeback in the first set before a service error halted a 2-0 Golden Bear run and gave West Chester a 25-21 first-set victory.

With an early 1-0 lead in the match, West Chester went to work in the second set, jumping out to an early 13-7 lead thanks in part to three early kills by Isenberg and back-to-back Zoe Brown aces. West Chester and Kutztown traded points down the stretch of the second set, but West Chester used a 5-1 run, led by a kill, ace sequence from Lacie Brown, and back-to-back Richardson to close out the second set by a 25-16 final.

Kutztown got an early lead in the third set and held a 15-11 advantage at the midway point before West Chester went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-15 lead over the Golden Bears. Kutztown answered with a 5-0 run to take a 20-16 lead, which began a back-and-forth end to the third set. West Chester managed to tie the set at 20-20 after a Shaena Brooks (Willoughby Hills, Oh./Eastlake north) ace, but Kutztown closed the set on a 5-3 run to win the third by a 25-23 final and force a fourth set.

With bad memories of a reverse sweep at the hands of Bloomsburg earlier in October perhaps starting to enter their minds, the Golden Rams jumped out to an early 10-5 lead in the fourth after a kill by Nicole Dimiris (Hockessin, Del./Saint Mark's) but the Golden Bears refused to go quietly, answering back and cutting the lead to 11-7.  West Chester countered with a 9-6 run to take a 20-13 lead late and prompt a late Kutztown timeout. Out of the timeout, West Chester continued its strong fourth-set effort, closing out the match on a 3-0 run thanks to a pair of kills by Brown and Richardson to win the set by a 25-15 final and the match by a 3-1 final.

For Kutztown, Christina Lockett tied with Sarah Hess for the team in the lead in kills with nine each, while Emma Baldridge led the way in assists with 17, along with a pair of aces.
