CARY, N.C. – West Chester University stayed perfect on the season with a pair of wins at the USA Baseball National Training Center Saturday over Concord and Frostburg State.
West Chester (6-0), which has won each of its first six contests, has only been held to single digits in runs scored once. Saturday, the Golden Rams put up a pair of 10-spots in defeating Concord, 10-9, before dispatching Frostburg State, 10-3.
GAME 1 vs CONCORD
Evan Profy (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) and
Joe Kaleck (Southampton, Pa./Neshaminy) each went 3-for-5, and
Casey Vaughan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) had a pair of hits, as West Chester held on for a tight one-run win over Concord in the afternoon.
The Golden Rams fell behind, 4-1, after two, however, answered with a three-spot in the third that tied the game. When West Chester continued its rally in the fourth and fifth and got out in front, 7-4, Concord showed its resilience by knotting the score in the bottom of the fifth with three tallies. West Chester answered that bell with another three-spot in the top of the sixth that made it a 10-7 game. Concord managed single runs in the sixth and seventh, but could never get the equalizer.
GAME 2 vs FROSTBURG STATE
Anthony Boccio (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored while
Zack Miles (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Golden Rams offensively in the nightcap Saturday.
Joe Sperone (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) tossed six shutout innings scattering four hits, walking two and striking out seven to pick up the win on the mound.
West Chester scored nine of its 10 runs in the first four innings to jump out to a big lead early on.
Evan Profy (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) tripled, and
Joe Kaleck (Southampton, Pa./Neshaminy) doubled, in back-to-back at-bats in the second that helped to open up a 4-0 lead. Then,
Sean Szestowicki (Mount Royal, N.J./Kingsway Regional) hit a two-run single, and Miles followed with a two-run homer to double the lead after three.
