Box Score ORANGEBURG, N.Y.- Coming off a decisive 3-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday night, the West Chester University women's volleyball team (2-4) continued its road trip with a Friday night visit to Dominican (N.Y.) (1-1). West Chester took the first set, but Dominican overcame its early deficit to capture the match in five sets (19-25, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, 19-17).
In the first set, West Chester raced out to a 14-9 lead after a combo block by
CeCe Isenberg (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) and
Nicole Dimiris (Hockessin, Del./Saint Marks) before Dominican went on a 7-2 run to take a 16-15 lead over the Golden Rams. West Chester countered quickly, closing out the set on a 10-3 run and never trailing again to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
Perhaps motivated by its first-set comeback, Dominican battled throughout the second set and used a 17-6 run midway through the set to take a commanding 20-12 lead over the Golden Rams. This eight-point advantage proved to be more than enough for the Chargers to hold on to the second set, winning by a 25-15 final to even the match at 1-1.
Dominican led for much of the early going in the third set, but West Chester answered quickly, using an 11-3 run of its own to flip a 12-9 deficit into a 20-15 lead late in the set, thanks in part to a pair of aces by
Ashlyn Oswald (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), which got the Golden Rams to 20. Dominican did not go away quietly in the third, fighting back with a mini 3-0 run late in the set, but West Chester held on for another 25-19 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
After a back-and-forth match through three sets, anything less in the fourth simply wouldn't be right. Fans were treated to more of the same in the fourth set as West Chester and Dominican traded runs, but it was the host Chargers who closed out the set on a run, finishing on a 4-2 run to turn a precarious 21-20 lead into a 25-22 fourth-set victory.
In the all-important fifth set, West Chester and Dominican traded points throughout the fifth set, but the Chargers escaped with a 19-17 victory to upset the Golden Rams by a 3-2 final.
Isenberg led West Chester with 13 kills, while
Megan St. Jean (Eaton, Co./Eaton) led in assists with 23 along with 10 digs, which was second on the team, trailing only
Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton), who finished with 22.
Julia Kwitchoff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) finished with a team-best seven blocks.
Kaitlyn Carr led Dominican in kills with 26 while also finishing with 12 digs. Kaeden Sanstead ran the offense well throughout the night, finishing with 49 assists, while Linda Armao Peng finished with 24 digs to lead the defense throughout the night.
